Wildflowers, fall colors, snow…how do you choose?

If you’re anything like me, you’ve been thinking about your senior photos since junior year. You’ve probably been working on a Pinterest board and checking out local photographers- but you just can’t decide on a season! I am here to give you the low-down for the best seasons for your Colorado portrait session. Let’s get into it!

Spring

I will be the first to say, Spring in Colorado isn’t my absolute favorite. It is shoulder season in many mountain towns, AKA mud season. Snow is melting in some places and still shin deep in others, the wind gusts can be really strong, and some mountain towns may be less accessible- for example, the gondola in Telluride closes for a bit each spring. However, this can be a great time for desert or garden portraits! Colorado National Monument is an awesome location for spring photos, as well as the Orchards in Palisade and the Botanic Gardens in Montrose!

Summer

Wildflowers, green grass, sunshine…Summer is hard to beat in my opinion! You can go into your senior year with something already checked off the to-do list! This is my favorite time of year for senior photos in Colorado. Peak wildflower season is usually in July, but that is also peak monsoon season. It does rain quite a bit during the month of July, but usually those mountain storms pass quickly and can be waited out. There are so many amazing locations that are accessible during the summer.

Fall

This is probably the most popular time of year for senior photos. The Montrose High School deadline is early December so many seniors are rushing to get their portraits done. This is also a spectacular time of year in Telluride, Crested Butte and Ouray, Colorado. As long as you bring layers and are prepared for rapid temperature drops, this is one of the best seasons for your portraits.

Winter

Though not quite as popular, winter can be a great time for senior photos! As long as you bring layers & hand warmers, you’ll be just fine. Something about snowy portraits is just so magical, this season definitely shouldn’t be overlooked!

Glad you asked! Summer and Fall are tied for me. I love the warm weather and epic locations that come with a summer session but I also love those moody fall tones! Honestly you can’t go wrong, senior photos are all about capturing and celebrating YOU.
