Capturing Cherished Moments: Family Photos on Your Ski Vacation

Are you ready to embark on an unforgettable family ski vacation? The crisp mountain air, the exhilarating slopes, and the joy of spending quality time with your loved ones — it’s a recipe for treasured memories. What better way to preserve these moments than through the lens of a skilled photographer? Let’s dive into the world of family photos on a ski vacation, where winter wonderland and heartfelt connections come together in perfect harmony!

Winter photo locations in Telluride

A ski vacation is the perfect backdrop for your family photos. Imagine your family framed against a backdrop of snow-covered mountains, towering pine trees, and a brilliant blue sky. The natural beauty of a winter wonderland creates a dreamy setting that’s sure to make your photos pop. Snow can make accessibility a little tough in the winter, unless you want to embark on a snowshoeing adventure! But I have a couple of locations that will give you the winter wonderland backdrop of your dreams- no snowshoes required.

SAN SOPHIA OVERLOOK:

Literally ski-in, ski-out this location is accessible both on skis and by Gondola. If you are after slopeside portraits and maybe some action shots- this is a great option! It is also a well groomed area so it’s easy to walk on and can be reached by Gondola if you’re not feeling the ski vibes.

TOWN PARK:

Probably my favorite option, this trail has it all. Mountain views, a frozen pond and a beautiful river. We can also stop in town for that iconic Telluride middle-of-the-street-shot.

APRÈS-SKI DELIGHT:

For a little something different, we could do a cozy session back at the lodge or house. Let’s not forget the heartwarming moments after a day on the slopes. After all, a ski vacation isn’t just about the skiing; it’s about the après-ski activities too. Roast marshmallows by the fire, sip hot cocoa, share stories, and cozy up with blankets. These photos will remind you of the warmth and joy that comes with relaxing after a day of adventure.

Tips for winter family photos

Winter in the mountains is cold. There is no other way to put it. Noses get red and runny, toes and fingers go numb, and kiddos start to melt down. It can a downright uncomfortable experience without the right preparation! My winter sessions are short and sweet- usually about 30 minutes of rapid-fire shooting and fun prompts to get everyone having fun! More than 30 minutes with young kids can be overwhelming and frustrating so I make sure to get plenty of poses and prompts in quickly. To make the most of your session, the right clothing can make all the difference. There’s no bad weather, only bad gear right?!

LAYERS, LAYERS, LAYERS:

This is super important to helping your winter photo session go from being miserable to fun. Long johns and thermals are your friends. Base your kids outfits around what can fit underneath them. Scarves are also a great way to add a cute and warm layer.

HEADS, SHOULDERS, KNEES AND TOES:

You lose a lot of warmth through your feet and your head. Make sure everyone has warm socks and appropriate, waterproof footwear. For kids I highly recommend some kind of beanie, earmuffs or over-the-ear headband.

COATS:

Bring some cute and functional coats for some of your photos. Trench coats, pea coats, and neutral colored puffers are great options.

HANDWARMERS:

Bring hand-warmers for pant or jacket pockets. This is a game changer and a quick fix for cold, red noses! Putting toe warmers in boots is a great idea too.

In the end, the magic of a ski vacation is in the memories you create. So, whether you’re an avid skier or a snow bunny, remember that having a professional photographer with you will take your family vacation to the next level. Get ready to hit the slopes (or the lodge), create unforgettable memories, and let a skilled photographer document the magic of your family ski vacation.
